Air filter maintenance is one key to keeping your HVAC running smoothly. While it’s true that your HVAC technician should change your air filter when they perform service on your system, that’s not enough to keep it in good working condition. Here are a few things about properly caring for your HVAC air filter.

Check It Regularly

For the average home, heating contractors recommend changing the air filter every two to three months. This time frame varies depending on the size of your home, the number of pets you have, and if anyone has any respiratory conditions. It’s a good rule of thumb to check your filter every month to see if it needs a replacement.

How To Check Your Air Filter

When you do your monthly filter check, start by locating the housing for your filter. Your HVAC technician can show you where this is within your system. Next, remove the filter from the housing and hold it to a light source. If you can see fairly well through the filter, it still has some life left and does not need a replacement. However, if you can no longer see through the filter, it’s time to replace it with a fresh one.

Types of Air Filters

There are four main types of HVAC filters. These include HEPA, pleated, fiberglass, and washable filters. The first three options are considered disposable, so you must purchase one when changing your filter. Washable filters can be removed and cleaned manually according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
